I installed solar panels, which is an upfront investment but it costs much less here in Mexico than in the US and cuts our bill a lot. I am impressed that you found other ways to reduce your bill so significantly. Very interesting to read. One reason I installed solar is that at the time and it may be true today, the Yucatan was having trouble producing enough electricity for the region, and as a high consumer, I felt it was a good idea for me to produce electricity to cover my use and not burden the system more. I was able to afford it at the time. But I am very glad I did.

Thank you for the great tips in this article. We currently have solar panels on our house in the US and we are very happy with them. I get the impression from your article that solar panels are not a very good option in Merida. If that's true, could you tell me why?
